Rock printing, specifically sublimation rock printing, transfers an image onto a flat rock surface. Here's the process and recommended settings: The Process: Image Preparation: Design your image on a computer. Print on Transfer Paper: Use a sublimation printer to mirror the image onto special sublimation paper with heat-resistant ink. Heat Press Transfer: Place the transfer paper with the image facing the rock and apply heat and pressure using a heat press. Gasification: The heat converts the solid ink on the paper into a gas, which then dyes the rock's surface. Cooling: Once removed from the press, the gas cools and solidifies, permanently bonding the image to the rock. Temperature and Time: There's no one-size-fits-all answer because it depends on: Rock Type: Different rocks have varying heat tolerance. Granite or slate can handle higher temperatures than softer stones. Sublimation Ink: The specific ink you use will have recommended temperature ranges. Here's a good starting point: Temperature: 380°F - 420°F (193°C - 215°C) Time: 4 - 8 minutes Key to Success: Follow Ink Recommendations: Always refer to your sublimation ink's specific temperature and time ranges for optimal results. Test on Scrap Rock: Experiment on a piece of similar rock before working on your final piece. Start with a lower temperature and shorter time, gradually increasing them until you achieve the desired vibrant colours without scorching the rock. Additional Tips: Use a heat press designed for sublimation printing for even pressure distribution. Experiment with different rock types to find what works best for your project. Remember, sublimation on rocks can be a bit tricky. Patience, testing, and following your ink's recommendations are key to creating beautiful, long-lasting rock prints!
